Focus on Brazilian Films

A film series devoted to the exhibition and exploration of works by women filmmakers from contemporary Brazil continues today (Feb. 4) with the showing of Mar de Rosas at 7 p.m. in Jones Hall on the uptown campus.

The 1977 film, directed by Ana Carolina, is a black comedy that explores familial situations and is centered on the teenage anti-heroine Betinha, who is rambunctious and unpredictable. It will be shown in room 204 of Jones Hall.

The series, called "Mulheres da Retomada: Women Filmmakers in Contemporary Brazilian Cinema," continues with nine additional films showing each Thursday this semester through April 22.

It will conclude with a film festival and conference in November. The project is funded through a grant from the Newcomb College Institute, the Stone Center for Latin American Studies and the Silverstein Fund of the Film Studies Program. It is co-organized by Ana Lopez, associate professor of communication, and Rebecca Atencio, assistant professor of Spanish and Portuguese.
