Forum to Feature Gay Rights Experts

The Tulane Journal of Law and Sexuality will feature national gay rights experts at a symposium on Friday (Jan. 29) exploring legal considerations that lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender clients face.

The symposium will include discussions about seeking power of attorney, orders of adoption, wills, property transfers and other legal instruments. Panels also will address the specific needs of transgender clients and clients who are victims of intimate-partner violence.

"Durable Relationships Under the Law" is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at Tulane University School of Law, 6329 Freret St. Regular registration is $50, but a discounted fee of $25 is available for non-Tulane students, faculty, non-profit employees, government employees and paralegals. Tulane students and faculty may register for free.

Sessions include: "State of the Gay-tion," an overview of current and upcoming LGBT policy concerns, legislation and legal practices; "Trans-Law 101: A Primer for Legal Issues Affecting Trans-Clients"; "Intimate-Partner Violence: A Look at the Unique Legal Considerations Facing LGBT Victims of Domestic Violence"; and "Creating Durable Legal Instruments for LGBT Clients."

"The symposium will be a great opportunity to hear firsthand from practitioners who are on the cutting edge of gay rights law," said Jason Ullman, an editor for the journal.
