Golfer Tees Up With the Pros

It's a young golfer's dream opportunity — Tulane junior Janine Fellows will tee off today (July 8) for the 2010 U.S. Women's Open at the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa. Fellows will be paired with Junthima Gulyanamitta from Thailand and Marianne Skarpnord from Norway.

The U.S. Women's Open will take place today through Sunday (July 11) and will be broadcast to more than 100 countries including live television coverage on ESPN2 and NBC Sports. Fellows will be writing about her experience on the Tulane athletics website.

Fellows, a native of Houston, is one of 156 professional and amateur players competing in the prestigious event. She was Conference USA Co-Player of the Year this past season and qualified for the U.S. Women's Open in early June by shooting a two-round total of 145 at the Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond, Texas, one of 12 sites around the country hosting qualifiers.

“What an amazing accomplishment for Janine,” Tulane head coach John Thomas Horton said. “The U.S. Women's Open is the biggest stage for a female golfer to compete. This is a chance of a lifetime for her and an exciting time for our program and Tulane University. We wish her the best.”

This past season, Fellows led the Green Wave to its second-straight C-USA title, an NCAA East Regional appearance and the program's second-straight trip to the NCAA Championships where the team finished 18th. For the year, Fellows played 33 rounds in 12 tournaments and led the team with a 74.39 stroke average.She completed the 2009-10 season ranked No. 60 in the nation, put together nine rounds of par or better this past season and produced five top-10 finishes.

Former Green Wave All-American Alison Walshe, who hails from Westford, Mass., also qualified for the U.S. Women's Open.
