Honors, Awards on Campus

James J. Balsamo Jr., director of the Tulane Office of Environmental Health and Safety, received the 2010 Walter F. Snyder Award for Achievement in Advancing Environmental Health from NSF International, the public health and safety company, and the National Environmental Health Association. The award recognizes outstanding accomplishment in the fields of health and the environment. Basalmo also is a clinical assistant professor of public health.

Adeline Masquelier, professor of anthropology and director of the Religious Studies Program, has received a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for her research on Muslim youth, particularly males, in the West African country of Niger. Masquelier will write a book documenting the struggles of the largely unemployed or underemployed young men of Niger. She is the only scholar in Louisiana to receive a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship.

Dr. Felix “Buddy” Savoie, Lee C. Schlesinger Professor of Orthopedics, was elected president of the Arthroscopy Association of North America. The organization of surgeons is dedicated to advancing arthroscopic surgical knowledge throughout the world to improve upon the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculo-skeletal system. He is chief of the division of sports medicine at the Tulane School of Medicine.

New Orleans' Green Project presented A Studio in the Woods co-founders Lucianne and Joe Carmichael with the coveted “Green Giant” Award, honoring a local environmental hero. The award was presented during the Green Project's annual gala. A Green Project board member said of the Carmichaels, “What they've given to the city's artists' community is an invaluable gift that will last a lifetime.”

Third-year medical student Bill Teeter was elected to serve as chair of the Southern Organization of Student Representatives, a group within the Association of American Medical Colleges. The election occurred at the national Group on Student Affairs meeting in Austin, Texas.

Lance Query has accepted reappointment for another five-year term as the university's dean of libraries and academic information resources. He joined Tulane in 2000.
