The 2018 Spring Internship Series wraps up with the Center for Public Service (CPS) Internship Fair in the Qatar Ballroom on Wednesday, March 21. Over 90 nonprofit organizations in the New Orleans area send representatives to the fair to meet with students. About 150 to 200 students are expected to attend.

The internships, three-credit electives, can satisfy students’ second-tier service-learning requirement. In addition to spending 60 to 100 hours at the nonprofits over a semester, student interns participate in weekly seminars to talk about their experiences.

Students are encouraged to wear professional business attire to the internship fair and take copies of their résumés or CVs to distribute to nonprofit representatives, who will be handing out information about their organizations, candy and other giveaways.

“Our whole premise as a center is to work collaboratively with nonprofit organizations in the Greater New Orleans area.”

The event is an opportunity for students and the New Orleans community to engage with each other. After the fair, organizations may offer students internship positions, but students can also reach out to organizations to express further interest.

“[CPS internships] combine professional, hands-on experience with giving back to the community,” said Myriam Huet, assistant director of academic community engagement at CPS. “You gain the same professional experience as working with a for-profit, but our whole premise as a center is to work collaboratively with nonprofit organizations in the Greater New Orleans area.”

Besides the 90 organizations that will be represented at the event, CPS maintains a database of an additional 500 partner organizations that offer internships.
