Keeping time

Drummer Matthew “Fats” Houston, far left, plays with Houston and Dumaine Dixieland Jazz Band in the University College Building at Tulane circa 1945. While Houston was known around New Orleans as a musician and grand marshal in parades and funeral processions, his day job was working at Tulane as a truck driver and groundskeeper. Also pictured, from left, Louis Dumaine, Israel Gorman, “Sweet” Emma Barrett, William “Specks” Robinson and Louis James.
