School supply drives at Tulane underway

There are two opportunities to help local school children prepare for the 2018–19 academic year.

Now through Aug. 31, the Tulane University Staff Advisory Council (SAC) is holding a school supply drive in support of the Dinerral Shavers Educational Fund Annual Back to School Extravaganza, which features live performances, health screenings and a free school supply giveaway for New Orleans public school students.

SAC and the Ashé Cultural Arts Center are co-sponsoring the event.

Suggested donations include: crayons, pencils, loose leaf paper, binders, pens, spiral notebooks, scissors, rulers, index cards, colored markers, glue sticks, bottles of glue, pocket folders, facial tissue, paper towels, backpacks, construction paper, highlighters, binder dividers, photocopy paper, erasers, colored pencils, pencil cases, composition notebooks, red pens and dry-erase markers.

Donation locations are available here.

A second opportunity to help comes on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m., when the Tulane volleyball team hosts a Back to School game against the University of New Orleans. The Green Wave are partnering with City Year, an organization dedicated to supporting students' academic and social development in underprivileged communities throughout the country.

Attendees are asked to donate school supplies at the game in exchange for a free ticket to an upcoming match.

Fans can also use promo code CITYYEAR to purchase a $3 ticket to the game here.
