Opera in the house

Tulane students Amanda Wittels, Sam Flora, and Claire Demorest, left to right, rehearse a scene from Gian Carlo Menotti’s “The Old Maid and the Thief.” The fully staged opera-comedy is a collaborative effort of students and faculty from the Newcomb Department of Music and the Newcomb Department of Theatre and Dance. "The Old Maid and the Thief" was originally conceived as a radio-opera, broadcasted as a world premier by the National Broadcasting Company in 1939. It was first staged by the Opera Company of Philadelphia in 1941 and was last seen at Tulane in 1962. Performances are on March 8 and 10 in the Dixon Annex Recital Hall on the uptown campus.
