Astronaut Sally Ride Invites Girls to Explore Science at Tulane University

Want to learn how to extract DNA from a strawberry? Take a computer apart? Search for life on other planets? Registration is now open for the Sally Ride Science Festival at Tulane University on Saturday, March 13 from 11 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., where experts, including Sally Ride Science Festival scientists, representatives from local industry and faculty from the Tulane School of Science and Engineering, will run discovery workshops for 5th - 8th grade girls who are interested in digging into science. There will also be workshops for parents and teachers on ways to nurture students" interests in science and math. A $20 advanced registration fee covers the workshops, lunch and a street fair with hands-on activities, booths and music.

Workshops for girls will be taught by rocket scientists, astronomers, microbiologists, seismologists and more, who will share their excitement for science and technology with fun labs and demonstrations. Meanwhile, workshops for adults will address topics such as Hands-on Science for the Classroom (for teachers), Science Resources for Your Daughter (for parents and others interested) and Gender Equity (issues related to girls in science and math).
