Tulane University Recognized as Laureate by the Computerworld Honors Program

Tulane University has been recognized as a Laureate by the Computerworld Honors Program. This year"s honorees were commemorated during the 21st Annual Laureates Medal Ceremony and Gala Awards Evening on June 1 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. Michael E. Britt, Tulane"s Director of Administrative Services, received the award medal on behalf of Tulane University at the ceremony.

For over two decades, Computerworld Honors has acknowledged individuals and organizations that have used information technology to benefit society. Each year, members of the awards program"s Chairmen"s Committee, a group of 100 chairmen/CEOs of global technology companies, nominate individuals and organizations whose visionary applications of information technology promotes positive social and economic progress. Xerox Corporation nominated Tulane University for the exceptional performance of the university"s Document Services Center following Hurricane Katrina.

The Document Services Center manages a university-wide system of printing equipment and facilities that provide services for more that 11,000 students and 4,000 faculty and staff at Tulane. In 2005, about two-thirds of Tulane"s main campus flooded when Hurricane Katrina hit. Aside from disruption to academic coursework and administration, the university experienced significant infrastructure damage. As one of the largest private employers in Louisiana, Tulane faced a significant task in getting its staff and facilities fully operational and resuming its momentum as an academic leader. The Document Services Center was forced to entirely rebuild its operation, while being tasked with doing more with less to spur the recovery effort and future growth. Integral to these activities were the Center"s efforts to move from paper to electronic documents. The Center"s success has been key to the continued vitality of the university both as an academic institution and an economic engine for the community.
