AI is advancing rapidly, but the assumption that it will automatically eliminate jobs overlooks the broader implications.

Tulane University management and AI expert Shuhua Sun, associate professor in the A. B. Freeman School of Business, makes the case that adoption is never automatic. Industries and companies can resist disruption to established business models, and history shows that new technologies create as well as replace jobs. AI still struggles with the tacit expertise and judgment that people bring.

Shuhua can discuss how AI is reshaping work without replacing human expertise, and why the real story may be how companies integrate AI with people. He also highlights why consumers still demand the human touch and why policy needs to keep pace.

“AI is a powerful tool, but its value depends on how it’s integrated with human expertise,” Sun said. “The human side of work — tacit knowledge, context and judgment — remains very difficult to replicate. Companies that view AI as a replacement for people risk mediocrity, while those that use it to empower talent are more likely to gain a sustainable advantage.”
