Members of the Newcomb College women’s synchronized swim team, the Barracudas, dive into the Newcomb swimming pool in 1946. According to a 1959 Jambalaya yearbook, students interested in joining the team were judged on form, rhythm and coordination during tryouts held in the fall and spring semesters. The pool was housed in the Woldenberg Art Center in the location currently occupied by the foundry.

Workers near completion of a ramp outside Irby House residence hall on Friday morning (May 20). The addition of the ramp is part of the interior renovation of the Office of Housing and Residential Life located on the first floor of the residence hall.

Demolition has begun on the expansion of the A. B. Freeman School of Business on the uptown campus. Several trees and bushes will be relocated to other parts of campus to clear the way for the 45,000-square-foot addition, which will convert Goldring/Woldenberg I and II into a single structure. The existing space behind GWII will become the Rosa Freeman Keller Plaza.

A member of the Tulane Class of 2016 waves to her family in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Saturday (May 14). As we wrap up our coverage of commencement weekend, the staff of New Wave wishes graduates the best of luck. We hope they will continue to keep Tulane and New Orleans in their hearts where ever they may go.

In a 1914 Newcomb May Day celebration, the Queen, Theodora Sumner, center, was given a crown and scepter of flowers by juniors, and a large bouquet by the sophomores. Her six maids received baskets of sweet peas. During the event, held annually from 1897 to 1959, the juniors honored seniors with a performance that included dancing around a Maypole, weaving ribbons.
