Ten New Orleans high school students will be joining the ranks of incoming first-year students at Tulane University this fall as Posse scholars, receiving full tuition scholarships.
They will be the fourth 10-member posse from New Orleans to have full tuition scholarships to Tulane. In addition, the seventh Posse group to attend Tulane from Los Angelesâ“area high schools will arrive on the uptown campus this fall.
The Posse Foundation announced the awards and Tulane President Mike Fitts welcomed the future Tulane students on Tuesday (Jan. 6) at a reception at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. He sent out a tweet on Wednesday saying, “Spent Tues. evening w/ #NOLA students who will attend #Tulane after receiving @possefoundation scholarships. Congrats!”
The students were chosen from a pool of more than 400 applicants for their leadership, social engagement and potential to be changemakers on the Tulane campus. The Posse initiative targets public school students with leadership potential and groups the scholarship winners into posses or groups of 10 to provide support to each other on the college campuses.
The foundation has chosen 680 new Posse scholars nationally this year, with scholarships totaling $115 million.
Posse scholars who will be attending Tulane are Andrea Baudy, Lusher Charter School; Yush Kukreja and Hanh Luu, Benjamin Franklin High School; Cianjanae Purvis, KIPP Renaissance High School; Justin Sandoval, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts; Ty-Ron Wright, Edna Karr High School; Younes Boulares, Haynes Academy; Keristen Edwards, Riverside High School; Sydney Monix, Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology Academy; and Bilal Sarmini, Thomas Jefferson High School.
Also at the New Orleans event, other groups of Posse scholars from the Crescent City area were announced for Bard College in New York and Grinnell College in Iowa.
