2013-2014 is a boom year for Tulane Fulbright students

The Fulbright program at Tulane University has blossomed in recent years, with the university recognized as a Fulbright U.S. Student Top Producer for 2013-2014.

“Our numbers have gotten so big, with 53 applicants last year,” says Molly Travis, associate dean in Newcomb-Tulane College. As the Fulbright Program Adviser, Travis guided campus recruitment efforts for three years in collaboration with the Honors Program and a faculty committee drawn from across the university.

From last year's pool of applicants, 13 students and recent graduates from Tulane University are heading overseas this year to study, conduct research or teach English in the Fulbright program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

One of the keys to the success, Travis believes, is the feedback students receive from faculty as they consider their grant proposals. Travis encourages students to think ahead about the Fulbright competition.

“I try to tell students to think about their honors thesis, their public service, study abroad and networking with contacts in the country in which they'd like to work, to see how they can parlay these experiences post-graduation,” Travis says.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program competition opens each year on May 1, with a submission deadline in mid-October. Students who applied this fall will learn the results of the 2014–15 competition in the spring.
