Admission counselors visit city, campus
With 6,000 members of the National Association for College Admission Counseling visiting New Orleans this week for a conference, Tulane is helping to welcome them to the Crescent City, says Earl Retif, vice president for enrollment management and registrar.
Members of the National Association for College Admission Counseling are in New Orleans for a conference. Groups of counselors toured the Tulane campus while they were in the city.
“We are ensuring Tulane is front and center this year and that we are perceived as the premier 'host institution' for the conference,” Retif said.
Nearly 800 of the attendees will be present at events hosted by Tulane during the conference, the largest professional development event in the country for admission and guidance counselors. It opens today (Sept. 22) and continues through Saturday (Sept. 24) at the Morial Convention Center.
More than 200 counselors signed up for tours of the Tulane uptown campus and nearly 500 attended a tour and lunch in the Lavin-Bernick Center on Wednesday (Sept. 21). About 700 of the attendees are expected to attend a Tulane-hosted reception at the National World War II Museum on Friday (Sept. 23).
Two members of Retif's staff, Faye Tydlaska and Leila Labens, have worked for the past 18 months as members of the local arrangements committee for the conference. Tydlaska is director of undergraduate admission and Labens is senior associate director.
Tydlaska and Labens, along with Tulane admission staff members Jeff Schiffman, senior associate director, and Erica Salm, assistant director, will make presentations at different educational sessions geared toward high school guidance counselors and admission officials.
Their presentation topics include overall admission trends, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender issues on campus and highlighting Tulane as a “Jewish friendly” school to the Jewish Special Interest Group.
“Our entire staff is working tirelessly to ensure that NACAC 2011 is a success,” Retif said.
