For GiveNOLA Day on Tuesday (May 5) the Greater New Orleans Foundation"s annual online giving event that raises funds for over 500 nonprofits Winstead makes the case that giving to Tulane supports the broader New Orleans community.
“The university is the largest employer in the city, and all Tulane undergraduates do public service as part of a graduation requirement implemented after Hurricane Katrina,” Winstead says. “It"s such a large institution and it touches New Orleans in so many ways I am fortunate to get to hear about it from my interns all the time.”
Winstead and her husband have a long history as Tulane donors.
“As locals, we still feel very much a part of the university community, and we think it"s important to support it,” she explains.
But giving back is not the only way to reconnect. Even if Tulanians don"t support the university with a gift on GiveNOLA Day, Winstead says they should stay in touch with Tulane however works best for them.
This year, she is personally expanding her volunteerism by serving on her class reunion committee.
“Getting involved with Tulane always provides a chance to meet new people and broaden our network. Start with coming to a football game or tailgate community spirit and school pride is infectious.”
