When Brooklyn native Dan Hurley arrived on the Tulane University campus in 1947, he was thrilled about the warm weather and opportunity to earn a top-notch education. Soon after he arrived, fandom moved up to the top of his list, as Hurley found a passion for cheering on the Green Wave.

As the semester began, the campus was abuzz, gearing up for football season and a home opener against the vaunted Alabama Crimson Tide. The Green Wave pulled off a thrilling victory, defeating the perennial powerhouse 21-20. Hurley was immediately hooked.

After earning his bachelor"s degree in 1951 and law degree in 1954 from Tulane, Hurley began a successful legal career and started a family with his wife and college sweetheart, Joycelyn Schell. No matter how busy his career and family life would become over the years, he remained committed to supporting Tulane University and Green Wave athletics.

As an alumnus, Hurley has served on a number of boards and councils, providing leadership to the Tulane Alumni Association and Admiralty Law Boards. He currently serves as president of the Tulane Emeritus Club. He has been a member of the Athletic Advisory Council, served on the board of the Tulane Athletic Fund and is a past president of the Tulane Tip-Off Club. He"s also supported student-athletes as a long-time Tulane season ticket holder.

As Homecoming, Reunion and Family Weekend approaches, the Tulane Alumni Association will honor Hurley with the Bobby Boudreau Spirit Award for his many years of impassioned support. This time, Hurley will be the one taking the field at Yulman Stadium on Saturday (Nov. 7), receiving cheers from fans as he"s honored with one of the alumni association"s highest awards.

“Few Tulanians represent the Green Wave spirit quite like Dan Hurley,” says James Stofan, vice president for alumni relations. “His green wardrobe, infectious smile and support for all things Tulane have served as an inspiration for alumni through the years.”
