The Amistad Research Center is taking advantage of the crisp fall weather to invite the public inside for a used book sale this weekend. The sale, on Friday (Nov. 13), from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m., and on Saturday (Nov. 14), from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., will be held in Tilton Memorial Hall on the Tulane University uptown campus, where the center is housed.
“The sale will include duplicate copies of books in our library collection, as well as materials that fall outside of our collection development scope,” says Christopher Harter, director of library and reference services. Selections will encompass categories such as art, Africana, biography, fiction, religion and theology, GLBT history, music and more.
The Amistad Research Center is the nation"s oldest independent archive specializing in literature on African Americans and ethnic minorities. It is an independent nonprofit working in conjunction with Tulane.
“As a nonprofit library and archives, fundraising is a major part of our activities,” Harter says. “The sale will allow individuals in the local community an opportunity to assist Amistad in fulfilling its mission and meeting its goals, while gaining some wonderful new reading material.”
Amistad is committed to collecting, preserving, and providing open access to original materials regarding the African Diaspora, America"s racial history and civil rights. All proceeds from the book sale will benefit the center"s book acquisition fund and preservation efforts.
“Also on sale will be posters, many of which are based on the center"s fine arts collection,” Harter says. “We invite the public to stop by the center, talk with our staff and learn about Amistad"s upcoming 50th anniversary in 2016, and enjoy the sale.”
