“This event is popular,” Richens says, “because it offers the New Orleans community a chance to come to the art department, purchase the unique works of art made by our students, faculty and alumni, and to support the studio art program at Tulane.”
Some of the works up for sale are created by groups of students and faculty in a particular discipline working together, while some are submitted by individual artists.
“We have two-dimensional as well as three-dimensional works, functional and decorative objects, all made by hand,” Richens says.
The sale's special preview party will be held for Newcomb Art Gallery members from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday (Dec. 5). Individual memberships to the gallery will be available for purchase that evening.
The sale will be open to the public from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. In the adjoining building, shoppers also can enjoy a free tour of the Newcomb Art Gallery exhibit “Women, Art, & Social Change: The Newcomb Pottery Enterprise,” the largest presentation of Newcomb arts and crafts in more than 25 years.
The Newcomb Art Department of Tulane University offers undergraduate and graduate degrees and prepares students for careers in research, teaching and museum work.
