Award-winning Publications

Staff members in the Tulane publications office, who write and produce Tulanian magazine and the New Wave daily online news site, recently brought home national and local awards in photography, writing, graphic design and other categories.

Paula Burch-Celentano, university photographer, earned a national gold award in competition sponsored by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education in the individual photograph category. The award honors her photograph of professor Nick Spitzer in the “Ramblin' Man” article in the winter 2009 issue of Tulanian. Melinda Viles, design manager, art-directed the shoot and assisted Burch-Celentano.

In addition, staff members won numerous awards in competition sponsored by the New Orleans chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators:

• Two awards of excellence for Tulanian — one for publication design and another in the overall publication category.

• Three awards of excellence in writing for Tulanian — to senior editor Nick Marinello for his column on New Orleans, senior editor Mary Ann Travis for her story “Bouquet in Hand” and Ryan Rivet for his story, “Ramblin' Man.” Marinello also won an award of merit his story, “Speaking Treason.”

• An award of excellence to New Wave in the electronic and digital communications category.
