Campus groups team up for hunger and homelessness week
Several organizations on the Tulane University uptown campus are joining together to sponsor events in recognition of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 16â“24, to raise donations for the Second Harvest Food Bank of New Orleans and Greater Acadiana.

A Hunger Summit, featuring an Oxfam Hunger Banquet, is planned for Thursday (Nov. 21) in the Qatar Ballroom at the LBC from 7 until 9 p.m., hosted by the Community Health Advocates of Tulane. A donation of two cans of food is suggested for attendees.
The event will feature an in-depth discussion of the causes and effects of hunger, and how to get involved. Guest speakers will include Sister Jane Remson of Bread for the World New Orleans, Sanjay Kharod of New Orleans Food and Farm Network, Michael Kantor of Second Harvest, and Gary Granata of Slow Food New Orleans.
On Friday (Nov. 22), five-person teams will compete in the “Dodge Hunger” Dodgeball Tournament starting at 2 p.m. on the Newcomb Quad. Teams who signed up are donating 10 cans of food, while a donation of one can of food is suggested for spectators.
In addition, there are two opportunities to volunteer at Second Harvest, and the volunteer hours can be logged toward the Cowen Service Challenge.
On Tuesday (Nov. 19), Second Harvest needs 20 to 30 volunteers from 1 until 4 p.m. to help sort and pack food in the warehouse, or work outside with food salvage.
On Friday, Nov. 22, the agency needs 20 to 30 volunteers from 12:30 until 4 p.m. to help prepare and plate cranberry sauce, salads and desserts for Thanksgiving meals that will be sent out to seniors in the community.
