Community concern

Leon Miller, head of the Louisiana Research Collection (LaRC), unfurls a banner advertising the New Orleans Community Chest. The Community Chests in the United States and Canada were precursors to what is now the United Way. The first Community Chest was founded in 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio, and the New Orleans Community Chest was founded in 1924 as the fund-raising arm of the Council of Social Agencies of New Orleans. LaRC preserves the records of the Council of Social Agencies as part of its special mission to document and preserve social welfare activities in the New Orleans area.
