Confucius Institute hosts 'Amazing China' concert
The Chinese New Year is coming up on Jan. 31, but the Tulane University uptown campus will have an early chance to celebrate. The Confucius Institute at Tulane is sponsoring a colorful cultural event, with excerpts of opera, music and acrobatics, at “Amazing China: A Chinese Concert” on Saturday (Jan. 25).

The event, at 6 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium, is free of charge and open to the public. A reception will follow in the Qatar Ballroom at the Lavin-Bernick Center.
“This brings our traditional Chinese culture here,” said Huimin Xie, director of the Confucius Institute of Tulane University. “We hope this to be a nice kickoff event for the Confucius Institute.”
The institute began operations at Tulane in the fall semester last year. Earlier in 2013 it was announced that Tulane had signed an agreement with the Confucius Institute Headquarters of China to promote the study of Chinese culture and language on campus and within the community.
Saturday's program will bring performances by artists in traditional costumes from the Confucius Institute of Chinese Opera at Binghamton University in New York, along with guest artists from the New York Chinese Traditional Art Center.
These types of celebrations are a tradition around Chinese New Year, Xie said. Although the holiday is still days away, “people do start to celebrate even before, and have nice feasts together with friends and family, so it's already time to celebrate.”
The concert also will be held at Xavier University on Friday (Jan. 24) in the Mary & William McCaffrey Ballroom in the University Center, where a buffet will be held at 5:45 p.m. followed by the performance.
