Constant hard work

Near Freret Street, the concrete archway of Jones Hall, built in 1939, features an engraving of a printer"s mark by Christophe Plantin, a prolific 16th-century French printer and publisher. The image of the “golden compass” represents one of several variations Plantin used to illustrate his personal motto, “Labore et Constantia.” The center point of the compass represents constancy and the moving point indicates labor.
