Darryl Berger named chair-elect of the Board of Tulane

Darryl D. Berger, who for more than 30 years has been at the forefront of major real estate transactions in New Orleans, including developments on the riverfront and French Quarter, has been named chair-elect of the Board of Tulane, the university's main governing body. Berger's three-year term will begin July 1, 2013.

"We are honored and fortunate to have someone of Darryl's character, capability and vision help lead Tulane as it seeks to build a better world in New Orleans and around the globe,” current board chair Jay Lapeyre said.

A native New Orleanian, Berger earned a bachelor of arts degree from Vanderbilt University in 1969. He graduated with a juris doctor from Tulane in 1972, the same year he founded Darryl Berger Investment Corporation.

“Tulane University has always been a major part of my life, so this new role will be a great challenge and a great joy for me. I'm especially excited since this is such an extraordinary time in Tulane's history and Tulane means so much to our community,” Berger said.

Berger is a past chairman of the Tulane President's Council, a member of the Tulane Law School Dean's Council and currently serves as Tulane's representative on the Board of the University Medical Center, which is under construction downtown. In 2004 he received the Tulane University Distinguished Alumnus Award.

He is the recipient of numerous honors including: Gambit's New Orleanian of the Year award; the Jewish National Fund Tree of Life Award; the Institute of Human Understanding Award for 10 Outstanding People of 1985; the Young Leadership Council's Role Model Award; the Volunteer Activist Award; the National Conference for Community and Justice Weiss award; Newman School's Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Anti-Defamation League's Torch of Liberty award. He has been inducted into the Junior Achievement of Southeast Louisiana Business Leaders Hall of Fame.

In addition to his service at Tulane, Berger is chair of the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation; the immediate past chair of the French Quarter Management District and the Vieux Carré Commission Foundation; former co-chair of the New Orleans Hospitality Master Plan Committee and a member of the Board of Trust of Vanderbilt University and other civic boards and community activities.
