Devon

The much-anticipated Devon's Den has been formally dedicated at the Walker house in Destrehan, La., constructed for former Tulane University football student-athlete Devon Walker, who suffered a cervical spine fracture during the second game of the 2012 season at the University of Tulsa.

The dedication on Oct. 25 featured an intimate gathering of those who were major benefactors to Devon and his Den, and it was a special night with friends and family of the project.

The guest list included Rick and Brenda Dickson, Larry and Marian Gibbs of Gibbs Construction, Robert and Kathy West, John and Laura Williams and the entire Williams Architects team including Terry Parker, Juan Lara, Lindsey Madary and Rachel Smith. Among those who supported Devon's Den, but were not in attendance, include Jory Katlin and the Chicago alumni, the Yulman family and William Warren.

“This is a young guy who will continue inspiring people for the rest of his life,” Tulane Director of Athletics Rick Dickson said. “Our role is to be the support team behind him. We are there to help lift him up to do what he's going to do, and that's what everyone involved has done.

“I know everyone has taken a lot of pride and satisfaction in what they've done, because he has, does, and will always make all of us proud.”

With an array of state-of-the-art technology, Devon's Den serves as a focal point for Walker's return to Tulane University this semester to complete his degree in cell and molecular biology.

The room features a ceiling-lift track system, which allows for safe mobility throughout the room, a gas generator, changing table, specialized toilet, shower and equipment designed to provide a safe environment for Devon, his family and caretakers. Devon's injuries require comprehensive 24-hour care.
