Dr. Lee Hamm rolls out Vision 2020

Tulane University School of Medicine will bolster core strengths in research, education and patient care to build a national reputation as a preeminent research-intensive medical school that transforms health through discovery, lifelong learning and patient-centered health care.
That"s the vision school officials presented within Vision 2020, a new strategic growth plan that maps out the school"s goals and aspirations for the future.
“Simply stated, the Tulane University School of Medicine seeks to discover, learn and heal,” said Dr. Lee Hamm, dean and senior vice president.
“Over the next five years, our school will target five strategic areas to distinguish the school regionally and nationally while continuing the excellent work already under way in research, education and clinical care.”
The five strategic goals are to: expand translational research; enhance the value of the School of Medicine for lifelong learning; expand the clinical enterprise and align with hospital growth strategies; lead in destination programs in clinical care and research; and deliver high quality, greatest-value health care.

The plan also seeks to address and improve several enterprise-wide endeavors, including infrastructure, strategic partnerships, quality in all missions, accountability, faculty growth and development, and communications and marketing. Benchmarks for the plan"s success will include such metrics as increases in grant awards, scholarly products, national rankings, student and resident satisfaction, faculty and alumni engagement, patient satisfaction and volumes and improved quality metrics.
The next step will be finalizing a written document for Vision 2020 that will be completed later this month and developing an implementation plan that will tie into the school"s fundraising campaign.
Vision 2020 reflects more than six months of work and critical feedback from over 100 participants on several committees and nearly 1,000 respondents from a stakeholder survey.
By June 1, school officials will name an implementation team with a “champion” for each goal. Officials will hold a town hall meeting in August to present a Vision 2020 operational plan that will begin late this summer, Hamm said.
