Dr. Regina Benjamin Distinguished Lecture Series named in honor of former surgeon general
Tulane will launch the inaugural Dr. Regina Benjamin Distinguished Lecture Series, part of the Tulane Trailblazers initiative, on Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Kendall Cram Lecture Hall in the Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life. Dr. Regina Benjamin will be the first lecture guest. The event is hosted by the A.B. Freeman School of Business and the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
Benjamin, a Tulane alumna, served as the 18th United States Surgeon General and is the founder and CEO of BayouClinic, Inc. / Gulf States Health Policy Center in Alabama. She earned her Master of Business Administration from Tulane in 1991.
President Michael A. Fitts will welcome the audience; Paulo Goes, dean of the A.B. Freeman School of Business, and Thomas LaVeist, dean of the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, will join the conversation.
Benjamin served as surgeon general under President Barack Obama from 2009-2013 and as chair of the National Prevention Council, made up of 17 cabinet-level federal agencies that create the road map for the nation’s health through the development of the National Prevention Strategy.
Benjamin received an honorary Doctor of Science at Tulane’s 2010 Unified Commencement and was awarded the University Distinguished Alumnus/na Award in 2012. She also earned a bachelor’s degree from Xavier University of Louisiana, attended the Morehouse School of Medicine and received an MD from the University of Alabama–Birmingham.
Benjamin holds the NOLA.com/Times-Picayune Endowed Chair of Public Health Sciences at Xavier University of Louisiana.
The Dr. Regina Benjamin Distinguished Lecture Series is part of the Tulane Trailblazers initiative, which was established in 2019 by Tulane University President Michael A. Fitts to celebrate individuals who have made the university a more inclusive and diverse academic community.
