First-year Tulane University students have the option to become acclimated with the university and the community around it through the university"s EXPLORE programming several pre-semester outings offered by the Division of Student Affairs. Peter Young, a program manager in the Office of Alumni Relations and a program leader for one of these experiences, explains: “There is the NOLA Experience, which is centered around New Orleans themes; the Greenie Camp which bridges a connection between Tulane and New Orleans; the IGNITE program is dedicated to local community service and social justice; and the fourth program is ENGAGE, which is sponsored by Hillel and promotes leadership and team building.”
In this gallery of photos by Tulane photographer Sally Asher, relive some of the opportunities participating students enjoyed between Monday (Aug. 17) and Thursday (Aug. 20) through their enrollment in the fall 2015 Greenie Camp.
While apple pie for dessert is very American, New Orleanians enjoy their creamy pralines. At Aunt Sally"s Praline Shop, incoming students were introduced to the sweet treat with a taste test on Wednesday (Aug. 19). The students tasted flavors such as the original Creole pralines and the sugar and spice praline, which features a dash of Tabasco pepper sauce in every bite.

A tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 reveals a lot about the history of New Orleans and those who once called it home. It is the resting place of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau and Homer Plessy, a plaintiff in the famous case that established the “separate but equal” doctrine. Actor Nicolas Cage also has secured a spot in the historic cemetery.

Here, students take a sneak peek inside Yulman Stadium as the Green Wave football team practices on Benson Field. The students also enjoyed breakfast in the Jill H. and Avram A.Glazer Family Club in the stadium.

As part of a French Quarter scavenger hunt, students sought someone playing a musical instrument. Considering the city"s culture of music, they didn"t have to look far for a musician. When they found one, an impromptu second-line ensued.
