Close living quarters, communal restrooms and social activities designed to bring college students together are among the reasons why college campuses are a perfect breeding ground for illnesses like the flu.

In an effort to keep more students healthy, Tulane University Campus Health is administering free flu vaccinations through October.

“New flu vaccines are released every year to keep up with rapidly adapting flu viruses,” says Michael Fulkerson, marketing coordinator for the Tulane Student Health Center. “Because flu viruses evolve so quickly, last year"s vaccine may not protect you from this year"s viruses. The best way for students here at Tulane to prevent the flu is to get the flu vaccine every season, including this season.”

The vaccines are available at several locations. Students may show up without an appointment on these dates:

Uptown Student Health Center (corner of Willow and Audubon streets) – Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Downtown Student Health Center (127 Elk Place, Room 261) – Every Monday from 10 a.m. until noon and Thursday from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

Vaccinations will also be available during the Oct. 21 Wellness Wednesday event in Pocket Park on the uptown campus from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

For students who miss the free vaccinations in October, Campus Health will host several November clinic dates in Sharp Hall, Monroe Hall, Butler Hall and the Bruff Commons Lobby. The cost during the November clinics is $20.
