Green Wave women's basketball team hosts WNIT opener

The Tulane University women's basketball team will play in the postseason for the third consecutive year as the Green Wave claimed an at-large bid to the 2012 Women's National Invitation Tournament. The Green Wave will open WNIT action tonight (March 15) by hosting Mississippi Valley State University at 7 p.m. in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.

Tulane enters the 2012 WNIT with a 22-10 overall record, finishing tied for third in the Conference USA regular-season standings with a 9-7 mark in league play.

The Green Wave solidified its spot in the postseason by winning its first two games during last week's C-USA Women's Basketball Championship in Memphis, Tenn., before falling to regular-season champions University of Texas–El Paso in Saturday night's (March 10) title game.

The trip to the WNIT is the second in as many years for Tulane and comes two seasons after making the NCAA tournament in 2010. It is the first time the Green Wave has earned three consecutive postseason bids since 2003, and is the program's 14th overall chance at postseason play — 13 of which have come under head coach Lisa Stockton.

“I'm excited to still be playing, and I think it's great to be playing so soon after our tournament,” Stockton said. “Hopefully, we can keep some of the momentum that we had in the Conference USA tournament. I think we're playing well. For this young team, it's great to get as many games as we can.”

Tickets to tonight's WNIT contest are available through the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office with student tickets selling for $4, while general admission and floor seats are available for $8 and $16, respectively. The Tulane Ticket Office is located on the first floor of the James W. Wilson Jr. Center, and tickets can be purchased in person, over the phone at 504-861-WAVE (9283) and online.
