This week, New Orleanians will flock to fiestas across the region commemorating Mexico’s victory during the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Whether you aim to celebrate by dancing all night to Latin rhythms or by towering your plate with tacos, shake up your usual Cinco de Mayo plans by exploring these upcoming events.

The Velvet Cactus (6300 Argonne Blvd.)

The expansive outdoor patio and vibrant, art-covered walls of this Lakeview eatery will set the stage for three days filled with live music. PaperChase will play on Thursday (May 5) at 6 p.m., followed by Bag of Donuts at 7 p.m. The lineup also features The Molly Ringwalds on Friday (May 6) at 7:30 p.m. and The Chee-Weez on Saturday (May 7) at 7:30 p.m.

Casa Borrega (1719 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.)

Co-owned by Mexico City native Hugo Montero, Casa Borrega brings the rich flavors from Montero’s hometown to New Orleans. Revitalizing a 19th-century Greek Revival home, the Central City restaurant serves its specialty dishes, like pollo con mole, with a side of live music. Casa Borrega will kick off festivities with the Aaron Lopez-Barrantes Trio performing on Thursday at 5 p.m. followed by Fredy Omar con Su Banda at 8 p.m.

Mizado Cocina (5080 Pontchartrain Blvd.)

Known for its modern take on Mexican cuisine, Mizado Cocina will offer patrons 10-cent margaritas from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday. Additionally, the restaurant is partnering with GiveNola Day to donate 50 percent of sales from selected menu items — like refreshing mojitos and spicy salsas — to the Neighborhoods Partnership Network.

Felipe’s Mexican Taqueria (411-1 N. Carrollton Ave.)

Felipe’s Mid-City location is teaming up with nonprofit Puentes New Orleans to present the annual Mid-City Cinco de Mayo Festival on Thursday from noon to 10 p.m. The block party will feature raffle prizes provided by local businesses and music from Merengue4-Four starting at 7 p.m.
