The Insider: Have a vintage Christmas
Like an old photograph, holiday cards and photos from years past can present a feeling of nostalgia for those who can hold onto them long enough for them to gain a vintage feel. In today's Insider, we take a walk down memory lane using the collections of the Tulane University libraries as a guide.
Three women, 1954 Warren House on the uptown campus is named for Warren Newcomb, the beloved husband of Newcomb College founder Josephine Louise Newcomb. In this photo from Special Collections of the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, three women take a moment to decorate a Christmas tree in the Warren House lobby.
This old house, 1958 This card was sent from the home of Reinhard Steinmayer, head of the Tulane University Geology Department for many years. Lori Schexnayder, assistant university archivist in Special Collections, believes the house pictured is Steinmayer's former residence at 123 Nicholson Ave., Waveland, Miss.
Political dreams, 1972 This card features a young John Breaux, who was elected to Congress in 1972, the same year the card is dated. It is one of many political holiday cards donated to the Louisiana Research Collection by Carolyn Kolb.
“It's a nice example of how much information something as simple as a Christmas card can contain,” says Lee Miller, head of the Louisiana Research Collection. “We have images of Breaux's entire family, plus their names, a sense of their ages, how many children he had and clothing styles.” Not to mention hairstyles!
