The Insider: Peel, Eat, Toss and Smile
The essence of Crawfest: 10,000 people, 17,000 lbs of crawfish and huge music performers. The fact that this well-established event is run entirely by Tulane students is icing on this already delicious cake.
The festival, held each year on the Tulane uptown campus, has gained a reputation for being one of the best student-run concerts in the South. Music headliners such as Galactic, Alo, Dumpstaphunk and The Soul Rebels have helped earn Crawfest a spot on The Huffington Post's list of “10 Best College Music Events in the Country.”
More people attend Crawfest each year than make up the university's undergraduate population, and still the turnout for the event on April 21 is expected to be larger than ever before.
Each year, 10,000â“12,000 community members and students alike come out to the grassy quad and bask in the sunlight as they enjoy the bands, art, food and fun. Events chair Molly Kaplan says Crawfest is something that Tulane students “can call our own and be proud of. It unifies the campus and shows off how much students are really capable of.”
Crawfest's current street cred comes from years and years of building and maintaining relationships with community vendors and booking agents, and now the festival is reaping the rewards by having artists themselves personally ask to perform at the festival.
More people simply means more crawfish, more music, more art and more fun: the not-so-unfortunate price you pay for hosting one of the greatest music festivals in the South. Soon enough you'll be peeling and eating crawfish like a true Cajun.
