When one student accidentally kills another, the lives of three coeds take an unforeseen turn in Consequence, a dramatic film directed by Tulane University student Jonathan Nguyen and written by 2015 alumna Ashley George. The film will debut as part of the New Orleans Film Festival, taking place Oct. 14â“22.
Nguyen, a senior studying biomedical engineering, says he and his friends started working on the 81-minute film as a hobby last spring.
“I"ve always been interested in film and editing, but this is really something we did for fun,” says Nguyen. “Both engineering and directing require problem-solving and creativity, so the two are similar in that way.”
In what Nguyen calls a “shot in the dark,” the group submitted their film to the festival. They were accepted in the Louisiana Features category, which showcases feature-length productions filmed in the state.
“The festival is a competition, but simply being accepted to compete is already a win for us,” says Nguyen. “Everyone involved did multiple jobs. The actors worked the booms and the directors would also do editing.”
Everyone involved both on camera and off was a Tulane student, Nguyen says.
Ticket packages for multiple film viewings are currently available from the New Orleans Film Society. Tickets for individual films will be offered at a date closer to the start of the festival.
