The Insider: Your internship awaits

Gone are the days when internships were all about fetching coffee and running errands for the professionals. Just ask Kim Eiger, a Tulane junior from St. Louis, Mo., who is proof that interns really can take care of business.

Eiger's internship with the Court Appointed Special Advocates of New Orleans (CASA), an organization that provides trained community volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in court, is not an unlikely opportunity — if you know where to look.

Working for CASA was a perfect fit with her desire to give back to the community through service, and now she is the go-to person for the organization's local events. As CASA's event-planning intern, Eiger is currently organizing her second function for the organization.

“In order to plan these events, I have contacted all of the venues, the musicians and everything else needed,” says Eiger, who majors in sociology with a minor in business. “I am also applying for grants (and received my first one!) in order to help fund the events.”

Next up is Rock the CASA, which will be held on Thursday (April 18) at the Howlin' Wolf. Its goal, she says, is to raise awareness for Child Abuse Prevention Month in April.

If you're looking for an internship, there are two approaching opportunities you won't want to miss. On Wednesday (April 10) the National Service Fair takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lavin-Bernick Center. Also on Wednesday (April 10) in the LBC, the Center for Public Service Internship Fair will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
