International Education Week celebrates global education
Tulane University’s Center for Global Education is sponsoring International Education Week (IEW) from Oct. 15-19. The annual week of events includes a lineup of globally themed workshops, talks and performances that provide a way for the Tulane community to celebrate the benefits of a campus with international representation.
In keeping with this year’s theme of Language, the week kicks off with a talk on Monday, Oct. 15, during which School of Liberal Arts Dean Brian Edwards will give an address titled, “Do We Need Language Requirements for a Global Education?”
During IEW, the Center for Global Education (CGE) coordinates with on-campus departments to establish and promote programming. Emily Capdeville, associate director of study abroad at the CGE, said the week is a time to highlight Tulane as a truly global institution.
“The purpose of IEW is to celebrate the benefits of international and intercultural exchange.”

“The purpose of IEW is to celebrate the benefits of international and intercultural exchange,” said Capdeville. “We strongly believe that our campus is enriched by activities such as study abroad, Tulane’s global community of students, faculty and staff, and the wide variety of globally themed events and programs on campus.”
A Study Abroad Fair will be held on Oct. 17, bringing together study-abroad alumni and Tulane faculty and staff to help students research international education opportunities. The Careers Abroad Panel on Oct. 19 will discuss international career opportunities and professional job-seeking advice and offer a resume-writing workshop.
Kristy Magner, director of the Office of International Students and Scholars, said a program offered for the first time this year will highlight the value of international exchange.
“Claire Bangser, the visual artist behind NOLAbeings, will be spearheading a photo-storytelling project,” said Magner. “If you’ve benefited from the opportunity to study as an international student here at Tulane or abroad or if you’ve been impacted in any way from intercultural exchange, we invite you to come share your story.”
The Global Café/NOLAbeings event takes place Oct. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Lavin-Bernick Center.
The week will conclude with a performance in Pocket Park on Friday afternoon featuring the Tulane Brazilian Music Ensemble and Amigos do Samba, hosted by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
