Judging her to be outstanding
A Tulane professor of political science and author of the forthcoming book Gender and Judging, Sally Kenney has been named “A Person to Watch in 2011” by New Orleans Magazine. Kenney also is executive director of the Newcomb College Institute and holds the Newcomb College Endowed Chair.

Joining Kenney on the magazine's list this year is Ira Solomon, who became dean of the A. B. Freeman School of Business on July 1. He also holds the Debra and Rick Rees Professorship.
“People to Watch” is New Orleans Magazine's oldest tradition, says the publication's managing director, Morgan Packard, a Tulane alumna. She says that Kenney was an ideal choice for this year's list.
“As a Newcomb graduate, I'm so proud of everything that Newcomb and her alumnae have accomplished and will continue to accomplish,” Packard says. “Profiling its new executive director was exhilarating.”
While finishing her book, directing research initiatives and restructuring the Newcomb College Institute, Kenney also found time to teach an innovative course to Tulane undergraduates. Last year, Kenney pioneered a service-learning course on domestic violence in which students did court monitoring of orders for protection hearings.
She team-taught the course along with Tania Tetlow, associate professor and director of the Tulane Law School Domestic Violence Clinic, and Fred Buttell, professor of social work.
This fall, Kenney will teach the third-year Newcomb Scholars class, “Women Leading Change in Organizations,” using case studies she wrote and helped produce. Kenney intends to develop more service-learning courses on women, gender and feminism as well as to promote case teaching throughout the curriculum.
Kenney sees a bright future for the Newcomb College Institute and undergraduate women at Tulane. The institute is starting an array of new student groups and looking for more synergies between the research, teaching and service missions of the university, Kenney says.
