Made in the Shade

Thanks to the Tulane City Center and School of Architecture students, a central city neighborhood in New Orleans has a new shaded area for gatherings. A team of students worked with community partner Jericho Road to design and build a shade structure in a community garden space for the Faubourg Delassize neighborhood. The structure, made possible by wood donations from Dash Lumber, includes seating, solar-powered lighting, work surfaces and garden storage. The design team also included a park-style barbecue grill so that community members can bring food from garden to plate and share the harvest with the neighborhood. At the project's recent grand opening, residents of all ages celebrated by tasting healthy grilled vegetables.
