Myth, Mayhem and Majesty
Carnival is on everyone's minds in New Orleans as Fat Tuesday (Feb. 16) approaches. An online exhibit by Tulane and a special display at the Historic New Orleans Collection downtown both highlight Mardi Gras history.
Tulane has an online exhibit that features items from its extensive Carnival collection. Designs of floats, costumes and invitations are shown from the golden age of New Orleans Carnival, 1870â“1930.
Today (Feb. 12) is the final day to view "Myth, Mayhem & Majesty: A History of Mardi Gras in New Orleans" at the Historic New Orleans Collection, 533 Royal St. Tours of the exhibit are available at 10 and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Admission is free for members and $5 for others.
The themed tour of the collection's Louisiana History Galleries utilizes items from the permanent holdings to examine the evolution of Mardi Gras, from the colonial period to today. The tour reveals the insider's perspective to the fanfare behind this celebrated season and explores the earliest parading organizations, Mardi Gras Indians and Super Krewes. Each guided tour lasts approximately one hour.
