The Newcomb Art Department at Tulane University will host its annual Holiday Studio Sale on Friday (Dec. 4) and Saturday (Dec. 5). Held on the uptown campus in the Woldenberg Art Center"s painting studio and conference room, the shopping event features hand-blown glass ornaments, ceramic vessels, hand-printed gifts, paintings and sculpture made by art department faculty members, students and alumni.

“The sale always features a vibrant mix of media, from ceramics to glass, printmaking to photography, fiber arts and jewelry, and both functional and non-functional objects,” says Laura Richens, curator of the Carroll Gallery in the Newcomb Art Department.

“The glass area gets together for weeks in advance to make hundreds of glass ornaments by hand, the ceramics students and faculty make dozens of unique platters, and lots of individual artists contribute work as well. People look forward to this event every year because it gives visitors a chance to come to the art department, to purchase unique works of art made by our students, faculty and alumni. The shoppers know that they are supporting the art department as well as finding unique and beautiful items.”

The sale"s special preview party will be held for Newcomb Art Museum members from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday (Dec. 3). Those interested in early shopping may purchase an individual membership to the gallery that evening. The sale will be open to the public from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The Newcomb Art Department of Tulane University offers undergraduate (B.A., B.F.A.) and graduate (M.A., M.F.A.) degrees, and prepares students for careers in research, teaching and museum work.

One of the most popular items for sale is the hand-blown glass ornament, offered in a variety of colors.
