Office of Study Abroad offers free passports to undergraduates
The Tulane University Office of Study Abroad (OSA) has teamed up with the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) to provide free U.S. passports — a $135 value — to undergraduate students as part of the CIEE’s Passport Caravan program.
Held for the first time on the uptown campus, the program will bring students one step closer to studying abroad or globetrotting post-graduation.
The event takes place on Thursday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Lavin-Bernick Center’s Race Conference Room.

Tulane operates as a school of record for CIEE, which sponsors opportunities for both U.S. students studying abroad and for international students studying in the U.S.
“This is a joint initiative to diversify the student body that has access to study abroad and to help students leap hurdles that might cause first time international travelers to hesitate about going abroad,” said Annie Gibson, associate director of intercultural learning for the Center for Global Education (CGE).
CGE operates as an umbrella unit housing the OSA, the Office of International Students & Scholars and the Office of English as a Second Language.
“This will hopefully create a culture on campus where students are excited to think about international possibilities,” she added.
To be eligible, degree-seeking undergraduate students must be first-time passport applicants, U.S. citizens and not currently in their senior year.
Gibson said that students interested in participating in the program should schedule an appointment with OSA before Thursday, Feb. 22, to prepare all necessary documentation, including a U.S. passport application, proof of U.S. citizenship, proof of identity and a recent color photo.
“This is an opportunity to level the playing field a little bit and help take away some of the guessing game of what is needed for a passport,” said Gibson.
