Summer Lyric Theatre fans thrilled to the first production of the season, Man of La Mancha, starring Tulane alumnus and local lawyer Christopher Carey in the role of Don Quixote. (Photos by Michael Palumbo)
“I, Don Quixote” sings Christopher Carey, right, in the leading role, as his perplexed but dutiful squire Sancho Panza (played by Leonard Bertolino) strains to see the fantastical scene being described by the self-proclaimed knight.
At an inn, Aldonza (played by Kyra Miller) holds sway with rough men called “muleteers.” Once the knight-errant catches sight of the serving wench at the inn, he proclaims his love for her as his lady Dulcinea.
Don Quixote declares that a barber is wearing the Golden Helmet of Mambrino, to the surprise of the barber (Vatican Lokey), who wears the shaving basin as a hat. The show, directed by Diane Lala, concluded on Sunday (June 26). Summer Lyric Theatre stages two more musicals this summer: Into the Woods July 14â“17 and The Drowsy Chaperone Aug. 4â“7.
