Photos: Visiting Mrs. Obama
While he was in Kenya doing fish biology research, professor Hank Bart visited the Kogelo village of Sarah Obama, grandmother of President Barack Obama, with a group of students and colleagues from Tulane and the University of Nairobi.
Bart, at left in the first photo below, greets Mrs. Obama, while in the lower photo students present her with gifts, as is customary among the Luo people of Kenya. A professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Bart is leading a National Science Foundation research project on fish biodiversity in Kenya along with Gary Talarchek, assistant director of the Center for Engaged Learning and Teaching at Tulane, and Kenyan collaborators, Wanja Dorothy Nyingi of the National Museums of Kenya and Nathan Gichuki of the University of Nairobi.
