“This scholarship rewards a recent college undergraduate who has attained academic excellence,” said Dr. Thomas H. Grimstad, LAMMICO's president/CEO. “This unique program offers support to students as they continue their medical training to later become excellent contributors to the state's healthcare system.”

Beard graduated from Louisiana State University in December 2010 with degrees in biology and philosophy. As an undergraduate student, he worked as a research assistant at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge. Since 2010, Beard has worked full time as an electrocardiogram technician at three hospitals in the Baton Rouge area.

This recent merit award is part of a larger program sponsored by LAMMICO to assist students entering all of the state's medical schools. In addition to Tulane, LAMMICO has awarded merit scholarships to medical students for their first year enrollment at LSU-New Orleans, LSU-Shreveport and the LSU Dental School since the 2000–2001 academic year.

Including this year's class, a total of 48 incoming freshman medical students have used the funds to help defray tuition and other expenses. Eligible students for a LAMMICO merit scholarship are incoming freshmen from Louisiana. Students who receive the award do so for one year.

LAMMICO provides healthcare practitioners with medical professional liability insurance. Owned by its policyholders since 1981, LAMMICO is the only physician-owned company specializing in medical professional liability insurance products and services for Louisiana physicians.
