Scholarship recognizes student
Jane Ball chose to enter Tulane University School of Medicine because she wanted to improve the lives of her friends and neighbors in Louisiana. The Louisiana Medical Mutual Insurance Company (LAMMICO) honored the first-year medical student's commitment to health care with a scholarship.

Growing up in Metairie, La., Ball recognized that Louisiana residents have unique healthcare needs. Louisiana has among the highest rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Ball chose to enter medical school so she could conduct research and learn how to deliver care specifically tailored to the needs of her community.
“I'm very thankful that LAMMICO recognized my commitment to improving the health care of Louisiana residents. I want to make a difference in the lives of my family, friends and community,” says Ball, a 2013 Tulane University graduate.
Since 2000â“2001, LAMMICO has awarded merit scholarships to students for their first year at every medical and dental school in Louisiana. Including this year's class, a total of 52 incoming students have received the LAMMICO scholarship to help defray tuition and other expenses.
“Our scholarships reward students who have attained academic excellence,” said Dr. Thomas H. Grimstad, LAMMICO's president and CEO, who is an alumnus of the Tulane School of Medicine. “This unique program offers support to these students as they continue their medical training to later become excellent contributors to the state's healthcare system.”
Ball loves her home state and hopes to practice medicine in Louisiana throughout her career.
