Street vendor
A horse-drawn vegetable wagon sits outside the Orleans Sandwich Shop on Orleans Avenue in this 1959 photograph by Ralston Crawford. A native of Ontario, Canada, Crawford was a painter, a lithographer, a photographer and a jazz enthusiast. He first visited New Orleans in 1938 and returned annually to document the city’s parades and second lines. His photographs are part of a collection in Tulane’s Hogan Jazz Archive, and many are displayed in the Howard Tilton Memorial Library on the uptown campus.
