Sustainability + Globalization lecture series kicks off
Award-winning architect David Waggonner, who initiated discussions with Dutch engineering and design professionals on water-based urban design following Hurricane Katrina, will speak at Tulane University on Tuesday (Jan. 15) as part of the Sustainability + Globalization lecture series.
Architect David Waggonner, co-creator of the Dutch Dialogues, an intercultural exchange between Dutch and Louisiana planners to promote better water management in the New Orleans area, will speak on the Tulane campus on Tuesday (Jan. 15).
Waggonner, president of Waggonner & Ball Architects of New Orleans, helped create the Dutch Dialogues, an intercultural exchange between Dutch and Louisiana engineers, urban designers, landscape architects, city planners and soil/hydrology experts to promote better water management in the New Orleans area.
He will discuss the Dutch Dialogues collaboration, his firm's current work on the Greater New Orleans Water Management Strategy, his vision for living with water in New Orleans and the city's potential to lead a global network of delta cities.
Waggoner is working with local and international experts to development a comprehensive water management strategy that addresses sustainable storm water management at all scales, from the drainage system networks to individual lots. It will include ideas for creating supplemental green infrastructure systems based on the hydrologic characteristics of the landscape.
Ultimately the team's goal is to develop a model of sustainable delta urbanism that embraces water in all its forms to improve safety and resiliency, boost the economy and provide public amenities.
The lecture series is sponsored by Tulane School of Architecture Sustainable Real Estate Development program, the World Trade Center of New Orleans, the University of New Orleans and the Loyola University College of Law.
