Tulane summer program explores women decision-makers

Expanding on last year’s success, high school students interested in women’s leadership will once again have the opportunity to participate in Newcomb Summer Session, a pre-college program offered by Newcomb College Institute. This summer’s three new course offerings include Women’s Literature, Women’s Advocacy and Women Decision-Makers.

“In 2017, Newcomb Summer Session was a small but mighty program in women’s literature,” said Molly Pulda, director of Newcomb Summer Session. “This year, I can’t wait to meet a new cohort of high school students with all kinds of interests: communications, policy, business and literature.”

Students in Women’s Advocacy will practice communications tactics, from public speaking to social media, to advocate for change in their communities. Women Decision-Makers will put students in the shoes of women leaders facing real-life issues in the public and private sector.

Students in Women’s Literature will analyze how women have been written out of literary history and gain strategies for writing the most important essay of their high school career: the college application essay.  

Each course is designed to inspire leadership, promote collaboration and prepare students for college-level reading and discussion.

Laura Arenas, a student from the 2017 Newcomb Summer Session, said the program was instrumental in her preparation for college courses.

“From the program, I deepened my knowledge of literature and history, but I also discovered how to apply that knowledge to our society,” said Arenas.

Applications for Newcomb Summer Session will be accepted through March 31. Tulane staff and faculty can receive a 10 percent discount on program tuition. Scholarships are also available.
