Weatherhead Hall the newest residence hall on the Tulane University uptown campus is racking up design awards. It won the on-campus Best Architecture/Design “innovator” award from Student Housing Business magazine and StudentHousingBusiness.com. The building also received a merit award for architecture from the American Institute of Architects, New Orleans chapter, at a ceremony in March. The theme of the AIA design awards was “Design Beyond Sustainability.”
Student Housing Business awards recognize the student housing industry's most original developers, architects and managers. Weatherhead Hall received the only award in the on-campus architecture/design category.
Weatherhead Hall opened in August 2011. Designed by the architecture firm Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Co. in association with John C. Williams Architects, the residence hall is an energy-efficient “green” building.
Located at the corner of Willow Street and Newcomb Place, Weatherhead Hall houses more than 250 sophomore honors students.
It is named in honor of the late Albert J. Weatherhead III and his wife, Celia, who is a graduate of Newcomb College and a member of the Board of Tulane.
In the last two years the Weatherhead Foundation has pledged $100 million to Tulane for student scholarships and universitywide professorships.
